Soon it will be possible to adjust the price of the electricity based on when power consumption is high and when it is low. When people make dinner and wash clothes, electricity will be more expensive than in the middle of the night when most people are sleeping.
Variable electricity prices
To avoid increased power bills, people would have to change their electricity consumption. On the other hand, this is not as easy as it sounds. If you are at work during the day, you cannot change the time you eat dinner that much. You also need to shower either before or after work.
One solution to this problem is to use a home battery. The battery charges when electricity prices are low, and when prices are high you can tap it. Such home batteries are available today, but they are very expensive. If you have an electric car, however, you may not have to buy a new battery.
Vehicle to Grid
Such technology is called Vehicle to Grid, or V2G, and means that you charge the battery in the electric car with electricity from a building. The electricity is stored in the battery, but can be returned when needed.
Today, only a few cars support V2G, but this includes all of Nissan's electric cars. It is expected that other car manufacturers will start using V2G technology in the future.
V2G in use
There is a big V2G facility located in Copenhagen. The company Frederiksberg Forsyning has bought 10 Nissan cars and the same number of charging stations, all set up for V2G. The cars are used as company cars. When they are not in use, they are connected to the charging stations. The company has full control over the charging. Some of the cars need to have full batteries, while others can supply the building with electricity. With full control of the systems, it is easy to avoid the car battery winding up empty when the car is needed.
Most buildings and cars don't have the facilities to use V2G yet, but it is still possible to get better control of your electricity consumption. To avoid using a lot of power to charge the car when electricity is expensive, or when you need a lot of power elsewhere, we recommend installing a charging station with SmartCharge. SmartCharge monitors the power consumption in the building at all times, and balances the use of electricity automatically.
